PANAJI: The Church in Goa has strongly criticised the recent offensive statements directed at St Francis Xavier, terming them hurtful and intended to create division among communities.
Reacting to the controversy, the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman said the remarks have deeply wounded the sentiments of people across the state, noting that the revered saint—fondly known as “Goencho Saib”—is respected by people of all faiths.
The Church cautioned that such comments could disturb the state’s long-standing communal harmony and foster unnecessary tensions. It described the statements as irresponsible and damaging, stressing that they have caused distress among devotees.
Urging accountability, the Archdiocese called on authorities to take appropriate legal steps against those responsible. At the same time, it appealed to citizens to remain calm and not allow the situation to escalate.
Reiterating its commitment to peace and unity, the Church encouraged the public to uphold mutual respect and coexistence, especially in the face of provocation. The issue has sparked widespread reactions, with several sections of society condemning the remarks and demanding strict action.
