PANAJI: The High Court last month ordered the Goa State Pollution Control Board to look into the matter of the commercial establishments in Colva not having sewerage connections, taking serious note of the submission made by the government counsel on the Colva sewerage issue.
In fact, the High Court had noted that the GSPCB would have to decide whether to permit the 43 commercial establishments to continue operating if they refused to link to the STP.
The manner in which these forty-three commercial establishments are treating their sewage is unclear. The petitioners allege that the Colva Creek is being covertly exposed to this massive amount of sewage.
The High Court had noted that since this is a serious issue, the GSPCB must order the commercial establishments to connect to the common STP; if this is not possible, the GSPCB must decide whether to permit the commercial establishments to continue operating.
Additionally, the High Court ordered the GSPCB to submit a status report by the following date and asked the Board Counsel to inform the Court of any developments regarding this matter on the following date.
It was also mandated that the Sewerage Corporation submit an affidavit providing an updated status of the STP plant.
Additionally, Colva Civic and Consumer Forum, the petitioner, was instructed to file an affidavit stating whether or not they or their members were able to connect to the STP. The Court is probably going to hear this matter in August.
