PORVORIM: Labour and Employment Minister Atanasio Monserrate said that the Labour Act has been amended to increase fines for Goan companies advertising posts outside the State from Rs 500 to Rs 10,000 and Rs 1 lakh, in addition to imprisonment.
In response to MLA Venzy Veigas’s calling attention notice, which expressed concerns about the Goan job market and companies hiring outside the state, Babush said that two companies had been given show-cause notices and were facing legal action.
“The Rs 500 fine was excessively light, making it easy for businesses to get away with breaking the law. We have now raised the fine to one lakh to one hundred thousand rupees, along with jail time,” he declared.
In response to Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao’s question regarding the sudden relocation of Goan staff members to other states, Babush said that the government was not allowed to meddle in internal business affairs.
Babush also voiced concern over the fact that only four businesses have benefited from the Goa government’s subsidy scheme for small to large companies, which offers financial benefits for hiring at least 60% of Goans in regular jobs with a minimum salary of Rs 8,000.
