NAVELIM: Allegations of irregularities in recruitment at the Navelim Panchayat have surfaced after resident Roshni Rodrigues filed a complaint with the Vigilance Department and the Director of Panchayats, seeking an inquiry into the matter.
According to the complaint, members of the panchayat board allegedly appointed one of their relatives to a job and subsequently increased the employee’s monthly salary from ₹13,000 to ₹21,000 without obtaining the required approval from the competent authorities.
On Monday, local villagers also visited the office of the Block Development Officer (BDO), where they held discussions with officials and demanded immediate action and a thorough inquiry into the alleged irregularities.
Responding to the allegations, Sarpanch Paul Perera said that while approval from the BDO or the Director of Panchayats had not been obtained at the time of the appointment and salary revision, the decision had been taken unanimously by the panchayat body to avoid inconvenience to the public.
He further stated that the panchayat has now sought the necessary approval from the concerned authorities.
