MARGAO: Madganvcho Awaaz and youth leader Prabhav Naik have filed a formal complaint with the South Goa District Collector alleging irregular and arbitrary collection of “sopo” fees from goods vehicles entering the Margao market area.
The complaint has flagged serious concerns over what it describes as an unregulated system of fee collection that is reportedly being enforced on transport vehicles engaged in daily trade and logistics activities. It states that the practice has been continuing for some time, causing financial strain and inconvenience to traders, transporters, and the broader business community.
Copies of the representation have also been submitted to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, Urban Development Minister Vishwajit Rane, PWD Minister Digambar Kamat, Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, and the Margao Municipal Council, seeking intervention at multiple administrative levels.
The complaint calls for a detailed inquiry into the mechanism of collection, including identification of individuals or agencies involved, and scrutiny of the process under which such fees are being levied.
It further urges authorities to ensure transparency and accountability in public fee collection systems, particularly in key commercial zones like Margao where smooth movement of goods is essential for daily economic activity.
The representation also demands immediate action to halt any unauthorised collections and fix responsibility on those involved, stressing the need to restore confidence among the business and trading community.
