CALANGUTE: Calangute Village Panchayat Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira today said that some has given wrong information to state government that dance bars are not operating in Calangute.
“Who has told the government that no dance bars are operating in Calangute. We know the reality,” said Sequeira.
He further said that how much can a panchayat do and do the panchayat have enough power to stop such activities.
“Extra Police force is required in Calangute area” he added.
Sequeira said that let anybody say anything. I know that dance bars are operating illegally in Calangute.
“We will not rest until the stigma is removed from our village once for all,” Sequeira said.
Joseph admitted that people should not take the law into their hands and hold their horses and allow the panchayat to follow legal procedure in taking action against the illegalities.
Sequeira also said that there was a lot of pressure on him to go slow but he would respect the sentiments of the villagers over the issue on the dance bars.
In January this year, around 500 locals from the coastal belt of Calangute and Baga in North Goa protested against the ‘dance bars’ culture, drugs and prostitution in the locality and demanded action against it.
Senior citizens and women who participated in the rally along with youths demanded that the ‘dance bar’ culture should be stopped immediately as it was spoiling the name of Goa.
