New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has congratulated veteran diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu on his appointment as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, highlighting his contributions to strengthening India United States relations.
In a public message, Trump described Sandhu as a seasoned diplomat who has consistently demonstrated strong commitment to enhancing bilateral ties between the two countries. He also expressed confidence in Sandhu’s ability to contribute to Delhi’s development while continuing to foster global engagement.
Sandhu, who served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2024, played a key role during a period marked by expanding cooperation between the two nations. His tenure saw progress in strategic, economic, and diplomatic partnerships, reinforcing the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between India and the United States.
He was appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi earlier this year, marking a transition from a distinguished diplomatic career to a key administrative role. His appointment is seen as bringing significant international experience to the governance of the national capital.
After retiring from the Indian Foreign Service, Sandhu joined the Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of the 2024 general elections. He contested the Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar but was unsuccessful.
Trump’s remarks reflect continued recognition of Sandhu’s diplomatic contributions, particularly in advancing India United States relations. As he assumes office in Delhi, expectations remain that his experience in global diplomacy will support both administrative leadership and international engagement for the capital.
