New Delhi: Delhi Police on Thursday said it has identified more than 480 Pakistan based social media handles allegedly involved in spreading misinformation during the ongoing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protests at Jantar Mantar, adding that many of these accounts were also active during Operation Sindoor.
According to the police, the identified accounts have been circulating rumours, manipulated videos and misleading posts with the intention of provoking people, particularly students. Authorities said efforts are underway to have the accounts blocked to prevent the further spread of false information.
Police officials stated that the same network of social media handles had previously been active during Operation Sindoor and was now attempting to exploit the current situation by sharing unverified content online. The alleged objective, they said, is to create confusion, spread misinformation and influence public sentiment through fabricated or edited material.
Appealing directly to students, Delhi Police urged them to remain vigilant and avoid being influenced by anonymous social media accounts or content that has not been verified. Officials warned that fake posts and edited videos can easily mislead users and contribute to unnecessary panic or unrest.
The police also advised the public to verify the authenticity of information before forwarding or sharing it on social media platforms. People were urged not to circulate rumours or allow misinformation to shape their reactions, stressing the importance of responsible online behaviour during sensitive situations.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic rights, Delhi Police said it fully respects the right of citizens to hold peaceful protests. At the same time, officials appealed to demonstrators and the general public to maintain law and order, cooperate with authorities and ensure that peaceful gatherings are not disrupted by the spread of false or provocative information.
The police said monitoring of online platforms will continue as part of efforts to curb misinformation and prevent attempts to exploit the ongoing protests through coordinated social media activity.
