New Delhi: Delhi Police has sought an extension of the deployment of 273 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in the national capital until October 20, citing concerns over possible escalation of protests and emerging law and order challenges.
In a letter dated October 12, 2026, addressed to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the Office of the Special Commissioner of Police, Operations, requested that the existing deployment be continued beyond October 12 to maintain security preparedness across the city.
Delhi Police had received approval for 301 CAPF companies. Of these, 221 companies were sanctioned on October 6, while another 80 were approved on October 8. The latest request seeks an extension for 273 companies until October 20.
The request follows intelligence inputs indicating the possibility of further protests and marches by activists associated with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and other organisations. The demonstrations are reportedly linked to demands for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner of India.
According to the communication, potential protest locations include Jantar Mantar and the Election Commission of India headquarters. Police have also identified Parliament House, India Gate, and the offices and residences of ministers as locations where large gatherings could create security challenges.
The letter also flags the possibility of participation by activists from other political groups, including the Bhim Army and student unions, raising concerns about the scale and duration of any further demonstrations.
Delhi Police has emphasised the need to maintain sufficient personnel to respond quickly to unexpected developments. The force said the possibility of prolonged agitation required continued coordination between CAPF units and local police personnel.
The requested extension is intended to ensure that additional forces remain available for deployment at short notice if demonstrations intensify or security conditions change.
The communication also stated that 28 of the 80 additional CAPF companies sanctioned on October 8 had not reported to Delhi Police as of October 12.
Amid these deployment concerns, the police have requested that 273 of the 301 sanctioned companies remain in the capital until October 20, 2026.
The request has been submitted to the Joint Secretary of the Police II Division in the Ministry of Home Affairs. However, the communication records only Delhi Police’s request for an extension and does not confirm whether the ministry has approved it.
