Ponda: Devout residents of Ponda have called for the removal of a chicken shop operating at the entrance of the municipal vegetable market, citing hygiene issues and inconvenience to vendors and customers.
A delegation submitted a memorandum to Deputy Collector Kaushik Amonkar, urging immediate intervention. The official assured that directions would be issued to the Ponda Municipal Council to address the matter. Municipal Chairperson Virendra Dhavlikar also responded positively, assuring that necessary steps would be taken.
The memorandum was submitted by Brahmachari Arjun Priyaprabhu of ISKCON along with Satyavijay Naik, Devanand Surlekar, Gautam Prabhu, Rajendra Desai, Shivdatt Nadkarni and other members.
According to the complainants, the presence of the chicken shop at the market entrance leads to a persistent foul smell, creating discomfort for vegetable vendors and shoppers. They further alleged that the outlet violates basic hygiene norms, including guidelines that require separation between meat and vegetable sections, as well as provisions related to public cleanliness.
The citizens have urged authorities to relocate the shop to a designated meat market area to ensure better sanitation and maintain the sanctity of the vegetable market premises.
Copies of the memorandum have also been forwarded to municipal authorities, police, the Food and Drugs Administration, and the Health Department for further action.
