DELHI: In a significant move concerning the disqualification of the eight MLAs who defected from the Congress to the BJP, the Supreme Court expressed its hope and confidence that Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar would fulfil his constitutional duties.
In accordance with the SC judgment, former head of the GPCC Girish Chodankar had written to the top court to ask Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar to address the disqualification plea against eight MLAs within three months.
Chodankar has petitioned the Speaker to have all eight MLAs, including Digambar Kamat and Michael Lobo, removed from office for joining the BJP, declared ineligible.
“We hope and trust that Constitutional obligations will be discharged by respondent No. 1 by the next date of hearing,” the division bench made up of Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar decided when the petition was brought before the SC on September 2.
The Speaker’s attorney had requested eight weeks to respond to the Supreme Court’s ruling. The new date for the issue is November 4, 2024.
