New Delhi: India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has urged Bhuvneshwar Kumar to remain patient and focus on his natural strengths following an expensive return to international cricket after a four year absence. Despite the veteran pacer’s disappointing figures in the first two T20Is against New Zealand, Morkel expressed confidence in his experience and ability to rediscover his rhythm.
The 36 year old earned his comeback after an impressive Indian Premier League 2026 season, during which he claimed 28 wickets in 16 matches to finish as the joint second highest wicket taker. He also played a significant role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s consecutive IPL title triumphs in 2025 and 2026.
However, his return to the Indian team has not gone according to expectations. Bhuvneshwar conceded 49 runs without taking a wicket in the opening T20I before recording figures of 1 for 50 in the second match.
Morkel acknowledged the pressure surrounding the pacer’s comeback, highlighting the challenge of transitioning from domestic franchise cricket to the demands of international competition. He pointed out that Bhuvneshwar had limited preparation time before rejoining the national setup.
The bowling coach emphasised that the pacer should not feel compelled to prove himself immediately. Instead, he wants Bhuvneshwar to settle into the team, build confidence and gradually regain his best form without being distracted by external expectations.
Morkel also explained India’s decision to select Prince Yadav ahead of Mayank Yadav for the second T20I. The change was primarily tactical, considering the possibility of dew making the ball slippery, the ground dimensions and the need for accurate yorkers during the closing overs.
He clarified that Mayank’s omission was not a consequence of poor performance, noting that the youngster had bowled well in the opening match. Morkel believes the break could help the inexperienced pacer develop a better understanding of reading batters, planning overs and executing different bowling strategies.
Prince’s ability to deliver across different phases of a T20 match and his yorker execution influenced the selection decision. Morkel maintained that giving young bowlers time to learn and reflect remains an important part of their development.
