PANAJI: The Goa Police Cyber Cell has arrested 24 people and seized 26 laptops, 24 headphones, 8 internet routers, and 26 cell phones from an illegal call center operating out of Zuari Nagar that was committing cyber fraud against US citizens.
Speaking at a press conference at the city’s Police Headquarters, Rahul Gupta, SP (Cyber Crime), claimed that the accused, acting in concert, posed as representatives of loan companies, Amazon employees, bank workers, Paypal, IOS, Zell Pay, Apple Pay, government organizations, and law enforcement. They used fictitious pretexts, such as loan aid, purchase payments, and technical support, to trick unwary US people into paying substantial amounts in the form of gift cards, bitcoins, and other currencies.
According to Gupta, a case was filed on November 23 by the Cyber Crime Police Station in accordance with Sections 66-D of the Information Technology Act, 318(4), and 319(2) read with 3(5) of the BNS. 24 people were arrested after a raid in Zuari Nagar was carried out in response to reliable intelligence and technical monitoring. They were allegedly caught red-handed running the bogus contact center.
According to the SP, Delhi resident Mayank Kaushik, 38, was the primary defendant in the case. Since it opened for business a month ago, the call center is thought to have committed fraud totaling more than Rs one crore. The staff members received intensive training on particular scripts to be used during calls after being hired through an internet agency.
According to the DGP, individuals who were arrested were aware that they were breaking the law.
He claimed that after passing through a number of procedures, the money from unsuspecting Americans used to be delivered in Delhi.
