PANAJI: The Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Goa, will launch a special drive to identify and take action against unlicensed caterers and unregistered party halls across the state.
The FDA has directed all caterers and party hall owners to approach its office or apply for the requisite licence through the FSSAI’s online portal, [foscos.fssai.gov.in](https://foscos.fssai.gov.in/), within the next three weeks. Those requiring assistance can approach the FDA help desk.
The department has clarified that catering includes the preparation, storage, serving or transportation of food for groups of people, whether at small gatherings of 10 to 25 persons or at larger ceremonies, celebrations, religious functions and institutional events. Individuals and entities preparing and serving food or snacks at parties and other events also fall under this category.
All caterers have been instructed to obtain a mandatory licence under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, comply with the basic hygiene requirements stipulated under Schedule 4 of the Act, and ensure that every food handler possesses a valid sanitary card.
The FDA has also directed operators and committees managing party halls used for public or private events to obtain an FSSAI licence or registration, as applicable. The requirement covers party halls attached to religious establishments as well as other venues hired for events involving the preparation and serving of food.
According to the department, party hall operators must ensure that the relevant licence or registration certificate is displayed prominently at the premises. They must also comply with prescribed hygiene standards, provide a proper kitchen or pantry with adequate waste disposal facilities, ensure the availability of potable water, and provide caterers with a permanent, properly equipped kitchen or pantry structure.
The FDA has warned that caterers and party halls found operating without the required FSSAI licence will face legal action under Section 63 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which provides for prosecution and a penalty of up to ₹10 lakh.
The special drive is aimed at ensuring compliance with food safety regulations and improving hygiene standards at catering establishments and event venues across Goa.
