New Delhi:
In a crucial meeting held in Mumbai on Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) discussed the future of India’s Test and ODI captaincy, with Jasprit Bumrah emerging as the frontrunner to replace the current captain, Rohit Sharma. However, Bumrah’s persistent fitness issues, particularly a recent back spasm, have cast a shadow over his long-term viability as a Test captain.
Bumrah, despite his impressive record with 443 international wickets in just 203 games, faces significant doubts due to his recurring fitness problems. The latest back spasm has made him doubtful for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, raising concerns about his ability to lead the team in a demanding Test series. During the meeting, which included chief selector Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and Rohit Sharma, Bumrah’s fitness was a key topic of discussion.
Given these concerns, the selectors are keen on identifying a strong vice-captain to support Bumrah. Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal are the two names currently in contention for this role, with Pant being considered the more suitable candidate due to his extensive experience and match-winning abilities. Pant, who is just 27, has already made a significant impact in Test cricket, including a memorable win at the Gabba when he was just 23.
Former national selector Devang Gandhi emphasized the importance of having a reliable vice-captain, highlighting Pant’s credentials. “Pant has played 43 Tests and has been a match-winner. He is a good sounding board for bowlers and should be the vice-captain,” Gandhi said. Another former India player, Deep Dasgupta, echoed these sentiments, pointing out that Bumrah’s workload, including ICC events and the IPL, makes it crucial to have a strong backup.
While Bumrah led India to a victory in Perth and was the ‘player of the series’ in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, his injury in the final Test against Australia has raised questions about his durability. If Bumrah is fit, he is likely to lead India in the first Test at Headingley in England, but the selectors are aware of the need for a robust Plan B.
Rohit Sharma, who has agreed to remain the captain for a few more months until a successor is chosen, will continue to lead the ODI team for the Champions Trophy. The decision on his successor in both formats will be made after the tournament.
