CANACONA: As heavy rains pounded the taluka, flooding cut cut-off the residents of Kudewada (Gaondongrim) from the mainland, while another family at Mokbhardwada evacuated self after their house got water-logged as water rose in all three major rivers of the taluka above the danger mark on Sunday.
The residents of Kudewada in Gaondongrim village were cut off from the mainland as the road to the nearest ward of Indrawada got flooded to a distance of about 150 metres and floodwater raced over the culvert bridge making it difficult for the people either come out from Kudewada or go to Kudewada ward throughout Sunday.
The rains continued unabated, and the water coming from forests and upper areas, almost washed the Kutcha road leading to Kudewada, and water began to rave over the Culvert bridge. According to sources, many of the paddy fields which were prepared for farming were totally washed out in the floods, in Gaondongrim and Khotiga areas.
Floodwater overflowed over the Bhatpal bridge and the NH66 was submerged in the flood water, on Sunday, and the same situation prevailed early Monday morning.
The Church Road in Agonda largely remained submerged on either side of the Agonda culvert bridge, with the flood water rushing touching the church compound wall.
Flood water entered a house at Mokhardwada of Shristhal village, and having no option, the family evacuated themselves to a neighbouring house, as rains continued unabated and the Talpona river swelled into residential areas along its borders.
Canacona Fire Services personnel were kept on their toes as late Saturday night they had to rush to contain a house fire at Agas-Maxem near Gopal Krishna Temple. Fire services claimed to save 90,000 while 35000 worth of damages were suffered in the fire.
Early Sunday morning, Fire personnel rushed to clear a Coconut tree at Devabhaga, Canacona that fell on Canacona –Agonda road. Shortly later, fire personnel had to rush to Palolem to clear a Coconut tree that fell on a house nr. Dr. Dhilon Dessai house. The house suffered over 50,000 losses.
A jungle tree fell on a house at Zamblimoll. Shristhal,where the owners suffered 5000 losses, while a Mango tree fell on the road near Government School Ground at Gaondongrim.
Another mango tree fell on a house at Galiem-Poinguinim belonging to one Umesh Murlidhar Kamat, causing a loss of over 10,000/- as the timely arrival of fire personnel saved over 1.20 lakhs from destruction.
In between fire service personnel also attended the call to Khola Panchayat where a roof sheet had blown-off and fell partly on the internal road, was pulled with rope on one side to clear the road.
A jungle tree fell on an Electricity alignment across the road at Polem, while another jungle tree fell on NH66 road at Gulem nr petrol pump in Canacona was cleared by Fire personnel.
A coconut tree fell on the house of Poinguinim VP Dy. Sarpanch Sunil Paingankar was also cleared by Fire services personnel.
Water entered into a house belonging to one Varad Haldankar at Mokhardawada, and when the fire services personnel rushed in to the rescue of the residents, the family finding the water already logged inside heavily, evacuated themselves to a neighboring house for safety.
According to sources, even as the rains lashed incessantly, the water rose to a threatening level in the rivers at River Galgibaga, River Talpona and River Saleri river, as the residents along the banks of this river cautiously remained alert.-END
