Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a long term rehabilitation plan for some of the state’s worst flood affected villages, saying immediate relief measures alone will not be enough to help families rebuild their lives after the devastating floods.
During a visit to the severely affected districts of Sivasagar and Charaideo, the Chief Minister assessed the extensive damage and interacted with residents whose homes and livelihoods were destroyed by floodwaters. In Nepalikhuti, Sarma travelled by tractor after damaged roads became inaccessible to regular vehicles, highlighting the scale of destruction in the region.
After meeting affected families, Sarma said the devastation on the ground was far greater than what had been visible through television coverage. He assured residents that the government would remain committed to both relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The Chief Minister announced plans to rebuild entire villages in some of the worst affected locations, including Bihubor, Nepalikhuti, Betbari and Nimaichan, with reconstruction becoming a key priority once the immediate crisis is addressed.
To provide urgent financial support, the government has transferred the first instalment of interim assistance directly into the bank accounts of more than 75,000 flood affected families. Each eligible household has received Rs 15,000 to meet immediate needs and begin repairing damaged homes.
Officials will conduct a detailed assessment of losses before final compensation is determined. Sarma also announced an additional Rs 10,000 for severely affected families in Sivasagar and Charaideo, which will be credited within the next few days.
The state government has also released its share of assistance under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, transferring more than Rs 160 crore directly to eligible beneficiaries in flood affected districts, including Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat.
With the flood death toll in Assam rising to 87, the Chief Minister reaffirmed that the government would continue relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts until affected communities are able to return to normal life.
