MAPUSA: Mapusa Municipal Councillor and real estate developer Tarak Manguesh Arolkar has been arrested by the Crime Branch in a fresh forgery case concerning an allegedly fabricated birth certificate.
Investigators suspect that the document was used as part of the process to secure an Other Backward Classes (OBC) caste certificate. The Crime Branch initiated action after allegations surfaced that forged documents had been submitted to support the application.
The latest arrest comes while Arolkar is already facing proceedings in connection with a separate property-related case. Earlier, the Mapusa JMFC Court had sent him to 13 days of judicial custody following his arrest in an alleged property fraud case involving around ₹40 lakh.
The earlier case was registered by Mapusa Police after a Mormugao resident allegedly accused Arolkar of cheating him of ₹41.9 lakh. The complaint relates to an alleged promise to sell a 51,000-square-metre property in Torxem, Pernem.
Arolkar was subsequently hospitalised after reportedly experiencing chest pain, adding another development to the ongoing case.
The Crime Branch’s latest investigation is focused on the alleged use of the fabricated birth certificate and the process through which the OBC certificate was obtained. Investigators are expected to examine the documents submitted and establish the circumstances surrounding their alleged use.
The allegations in both matters remain subject to investigation and judicial proceedings, and Arolkar is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
