PANAJI: Former Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, President Girish Chodankar has petitioned the Supreme Court once more to disqualify the eight defecting MLAs.
The petition has been filed and will probably be scheduled for hearing the following week.
Chodankar’s attorney told the Bench during the Special Leave Petition (SLP) hearing last month that the petition was no longer valid, and the plea was subsequently rejected.
In his January 22, 2024, plea, Chodankar asked the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly to expeditiously resolve long-pending disqualification issues.
He said that after an incomprehensible 720-day delay, the Speaker eventually rendered a decision on the pending disqualification petitions as a result of his persistent interventions before the courts.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court declared that the matter was no longer relevant because the Speaker had already made up its mind. It did, however, stress that a bigger bench is still considering the more general legal problem of Speakers’ delays in rendering decisions in disqualification cases.
On February 10, a new request was made in response. “The petition will act as a beacon for restoring democratic values and upholding the mandate of the electorate in light of the current circumstances and the numerous instances of blatant defection orchestrated by dishonest political actors,” Chodankar stated.
