OLD GOA: The 492-year-old Cathedral Chapter of the Goa Archdiocese was strengthened with the installation of three new canons during a special ceremony held at Se Cathedral, Old Goa, on March 30.
Archbishop Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrao installed Fr Leonard Pegado e Souza from Assagao, Fr Walter Sa from Santa Cruz and Fr Antonio Salema from Verna as the new canons of the Chapter.
The Chapter of Canons was established by the Apostolic See in 1534 through the Bull “Aequum Reputamus” and has since played an important role in the life of the Archdiocese. Traditionally, the body functioned as a consultative group to the bishop and also administered the diocese during periods of vacancy, besides celebrating solemn liturgical services in the cathedral.
Following the Second Vatican Council, the role of the Chapter was revised. At present, its primary responsibility is to celebrate solemn liturgical functions in the cathedral, while the consultative role to the bishop is now performed by the College of Consultors as defined under the Code of Canon Law.
The Cathedral Chapter of Canons is described as a college of priests entrusted with conducting solemn liturgical services in a cathedral church. The body functions under statutes approved by the diocesan bishop, and any changes require the bishop’s approval.
Officials stated that the last appointment of canons took place in 2019, when six members were inducted. With some members having passed away and others unable to attend due to health reasons, the installation of new canons was undertaken.
During the ceremony, the newly appointed canons were reminded of their role in promoting the spiritual life of the Church and serving as catalysts in strengthening liturgical traditions.
