PANAJI: Goa has witnessed a rise in road accidents during the first half of 2026, with the total number of crashes surpassing figures recorded during the same period last year. Although deaths caused by road accidents have remained largely unchanged, the number of serious and minor mishaps has increased considerably.
Data available till June shows that 1,255 road accidents have been reported across the State this year, compared to 1,151 during the corresponding period in 2025. This represents an increase of 104 cases.
While overall accident numbers have gone up, fatal crashes have seen a slight decline. Authorities recorded 126 fatal accidents this year against 130 during the same period last year. The death toll, however, remains nearly the same, with 132 lives lost so far in 2026 compared to 133 in 2025.
A sharper increase has been observed in accidents resulting in injuries. Serious crashes rose from 106 to 126 cases, with the number of people sustaining grievous injuries increasing from 127 to 158. Minor accidents also registered a significant rise, jumping from 237 to 280 cases, while injuries in these incidents increased from 366 to 434.
The number of accidents that did not result in injuries also grew, rising from 678 last year to 723 this year, indicating a broader increase in road-related incidents.
June’s figures reflect a similar pattern. Up to the latest reporting date, 160 accidents were recorded during the month, compared to 135 during the corresponding period in 2025. Fatal accidents increased slightly from 14 to 15, while deaths rose from 14 to 17.
Serious accidents during June increased from 17 to 21, and minor accidents climbed from 32 to 42. The number of persons injured in both categories also recorded an upward trend.
Earlier records for the January-May period had already pointed towards a rise in accidents, with 1,094 crashes and 112 fatalities reported across Goa. Although fatalities were lower than the previous year, the overall accident count continued to move upward.
Traffic authorities have consistently identified reckless and negligent driving as the primary cause behind the majority of road accidents. Two-wheeler riders continue to account for a substantial share of fatalities, while national highways remain among the most accident-prone routes. Most accidents are reported on straight road stretches rather than at junctions or curves.
