PANAJI: In a major push toward women’s empowerment and access to higher education, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inaugurated the ‘Ahilya’ Girls Hostel at the Government College of Arts, Science & Commerce in Khandola, Marcela.
Positioned as a game-changer for female students—especially those from rural and remote areas—the hostel aims to remove key barriers to education by offering safe, affordable accommodation close to campus. Built by Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation at a cost of ₹7.25 crore, the facility is designed to combine security, comfort, and a supportive academic environment.
The Ground Plus Two structure includes furnished rooms, study and reading areas, dining and canteen services, recreational spaces, a yoga hall, and CCTV surveillance. With accommodation fees expected to be around ₹1000, the initiative seeks to widen access for students from economically diverse backgrounds.
Addressing the gathering, CM Sawant stressed that empowering women through education is central to Goa’s inclusive development agenda. He also encouraged students to aim for competitive exams like UPSC and GPSC, while drawing inspiration from Ahilyabai Holkar, whose legacy of leadership and public service the hostel is named after.
The project is expected to ease commuting challenges, improve enrollment and retention of girl students, and provide a secure space for academic and personal growth—marking a significant step in strengthening Goa’s student-centric infrastructure.
