PANAJI: The proposed marina project at Nauxim village has drawn the wrath of the opposition Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The project has been resurrected following the environmental NOC granted by the center.
It was AAP leader Ramrao Wagh who brought up the subject. Wagh has been leading the opposition to this project. Wagh announced the project’s resuscitation in a video that was released.
“The local fishing population in and around Nauxim is against this proposal. The government was attempting to push this project through with force against the residents’ wishes,” said Wagh.
Congress party on the other side too opposed the initiative and joined hands with Nauxim fishermen over their protest against proposed Marina project.
Congress Leader Capt Variato Fernandes said that the project will affect the traditional fishermen living in this area, has threatened the agitation.
“We Goa Congress party assures to be with villagers of Naushi to oppose marinas project says congress leader,” said Fernandes.
The Union Ministry for Environment and Forests and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) has granted its green signal to the proposed AHOY Marina in Mormugao Port Authority (MPA) waters.
The Ministry has said that the project does not require Environmental Clearance (EC) but will have to obtain all other statutory permissions.
The Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) of the Ministry during its meeting held on October 5 has resolved that the “project does not come under the ambit of EIA notification 2006 as amended and does not require EC at the Ministry”.
AHOY Marina, as it has been called, was proposed by Kargwal Constructions Pvt Limited, across 1,00,000 sq mts stretch, with land area admeasuring 50,000 sq mts as per the Environment Impact Assessment report.
