PANAJI: Goa is charging ahead in India’s solar energy race with an ambitious new strategy to boost rooftop solar adoption and rural electrification. At the ‘Accelerating Solarization in Goa’ workshop, organized under the Swaniti Initiative, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant reaffirmed the state’s vision of becoming a leader in clean, self-reliant energy.
The event brought together key policymakers, including Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik, Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade, state cabinet ministers, and MLAs, who collectively emphasized the importance of policy synergy and on-ground implementation to meet India’s renewable energy goals.
Chief Minister Sawant credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for helping India cross 107 GW of installed solar capacity, with the nation on track to hit 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030.
In line with this national mission, Goa is rolling out several high-impact initiatives:
• 50% household rooftop solar coverage target across the state
• Development of 63 Model Solar Villages to promote decentralized renewable power
• Free solar pumps for farmers under the PM-KUSUM scheme to reduce reliance on grid electricity in agriculture
• Up to 100% subsidy for rooftop solar installations under flagship schemes like PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana and the Mukhyamantri Mofat Vij Yevjan
“Goa is committed to lighting up lives with clean energy,” said Dr. Sawant. “With collective action, our homes and villages can become self-reliant power hubs.”
The workshop spotlighted Goa’s emerging role as a model state in India’s green transition and reinforced the need for collaborative governance to meet climate and development goals.
