PANAJI: The Goa government has approached the High Court seeking cancellation of bail granted to three accused in the Birch nightclub fire tragedy case registered by Anjuna Police.
The state has filed separate petitions challenging the orders passed by the Mapusa Additional Sessions Court, which had granted bail to accused Saurabh Luthra, Gaurav Luthra and Ajay Gupta, all linked to the management of the Birch nightclub.
In its plea before the High Court, the government argued that the matter involves a grave incident resulting in the loss of 25 lives and therefore requires strict judicial consideration. The state contended that granting bail to the accused directors was not appropriate considering the seriousness and sensitivity of the case.
The petitions further sought quashing and setting aside of the sessions court orders that allowed the accused to be released on bail.
After hearing the matter, the High Court issued notices to all three accused and posted the case for further hearing on June 15.
The tragic fire incident, which had triggered widespread outrage across Goa, is being investigated by Anjuna police. Further proceedings in the matter will now depend on the High Court’s consideration of the state government’s challenge to the bail orders.
