PORVORIM: In spite of an increase in dog attacks and bite incidents in the State, the Goa government has decided not to implement its proposed ban on some fierce dog breeds.
The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department was forced to identify vicious dogs as a result of the Rottweiler attack on two minors in Taleigao and the mauling of a pregnant woman by a pack of ten dogs that had been adopted by a wealthy villa owner in Vasco. These incidents were both reported last year.
The Central Government’s order this year outlawing 23 dog breeds strengthened the State’s ban decision. The action has been temporarily stopped, though, as the Karnataka High Court is contesting the order.
“On March 12, 2024, the Central Government sent out a DO letter suggesting that 23 dog breeds be banned from being imported, bred, and sold for a variety of reasons. However, the Karnataka High Court’s reservations have prevented these prohibitions from being enforced until further notice.
In response to an unstarred question from Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao, Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar stated, “In light of the above, the proposed ban by the State Government on ferocious breeds of dogs is kept on hold.”
Although there have been fewer dog bite cases in Goa recently, there are still worries because there have been incidents involving both locals and visitors. Dog bite cases in Goa were 19,391 in 2019, 15,311 in 2020, 14,516 in 2021, 12,291 in 2022, and 9,210 in 2023, according to data presented in the House.
