PANAJI: Calangute MLA Michael Lobo told the House that the Goa government has gone against the assurance given to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on the Saligao garbage issue.
“When the plant was being installed in 2015 some people had gone to the NGT against the project. It is then the government had given an assurance to the NGT that only garbage from 23 panchayats in North Goa will be treated at Saligao plant,” said Lobo.
However, he added, waste from 10 more village panchayats and four municipalities is being transferred here at Saligao.
“CCP (20 tons), Mormugao (5 tons), Ponda (5 tons), Margao (27 tons), Taleigao (3 tons), Old Goa (3 tons), St Cruz (2 tons) are sending wet waste to Saligao. Besides, Additional dry waste comes from Betalbatim, Chicalim, Chimbel, Cortalim, Curca, Velsao, Varca, Majora, Verna, Merces, Sancoale, and Quelossim.”
Lobo asked why the Sonsodo waste (27 tons) is not sent to the Cacora plant.
“Cacora plant has 100 TPD capacity whereas it is getting only18. So why not send Sonsodo to waste there? Why sent it all the way to Saligao?” he asked.
Lobo said people of Candolim, Pilerne and Saligao have started gathering and may protest.
“Saligao plant is not a dumping site. The waste is not being treated there,” he said.
Saligao MLA Kedar Naik said that when these vehicles come with garbage they litter the leachette and the panchayat has to clean it.
“Recently, a loaded garbage truck fell in the field and spread stink throughout the entire village. We need to change our mindset not in the backyard,” he said.
He added, “Why Saligao should take all garbage, it is not the dustbin, every year there is an additional of panchayats and municipalities.”
Naik pointed out that at Gramsabha people have fought over waste issues.
“This will not be tolerated in future. We have no option we will have to come on the road,” he said.
Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai said that Sonsodo waste has become a major issue and while GWMC has treated legacy waste the remaining waste treatment has become a scam.
“Sonsodo has become a goldmine for the municipality,” said Vijai adding “We want a solution, what the minister has said is just an observation or suggestion.”
Margao MLA Digambar Kamat said the Cacora plant is getting less garbage hence the Sonsodo garbage should be sent there.
Nuvem MLA Alexio Sequeira also demanded Sonsodo waste be taken to Cacora.
