PANAJI: Minister Babush Monserrate today said that his government will amend the Labour Act in the next Assembly session to enhance the fine from the existing Rs 500 against private companies violating employment or labour laws.
“The government will amend the Labour Act during the upcoming session, increasing the fine from the current Rs 500 for private companies that violate labor or employment laws,” said Monserrate.
He further said that two pharmaceutical companies have received notices for breaking the law and failing to notify the state authorities about job openings.
Monserrate also said that the state government has decided to seek recruitment information from firms in the state.
“Govt has also issued show cause notices to two pharmaceutical companies that advertised jobs in Goa outside the state. Govt has decided to amend the law to enhance penal provisions for various categories of establishments,” said Monserrate.
Opposition parties in Goa attacked the BJP government as two top pharmaceutical companies having their plants in Goa tried to recruit candidates from Maharashtra. However, as the pressure grew, the pharma companies cancelled the interviews scheduled this week in Maharashtra.
According to Monserrate, the government will ask establishments for information on a wide range of recruitment-related matters on a quarterly basis.
These include the date on which advertisements are published, the locations of interviews, whether or not the state employment exchange is informed of these recruitments, the number of candidates who are hired and the number who are rejected, along with the reasons for each rejection.
The minister stated, “The government’s goal is to place locals who meet the requirements to register with the Goa Employment Exchange in the private sector.”
