PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today announced that Goa government in the long run is planning to start a new course BSc in Fisheries.
Sawant was addressing the gathering on the occasion of Aqua Fish Festival scheduled to happen in Panaji.
“The government is thinking of launching a Bachelor of Science program in fisheries in Goa. Students should choose to major in this field; the industry is worth crores,” said Sawant.
He further said that Maharashtra-based institute Dr Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli-Ratnagiri, has reserved three seats in the general category for students from Goa for degree courses in fisheries sciences.
“Goa government has been bearing all the expenses for Goan students, I urge students to opt for this course. It will help in long run,” he added.
CM also asked people to join the sector in large numbers and reap the benefits of various schemes introduced by the state fisheries department.
The Narendra Modi government is giving several incentives to create a blue economy and people living in coastal areas must participate to ensure they benefit from the sector, the CM said.
Sawant further said that fisheries plays an important role in achieving the state government’s aim of ‘Swayampurna Goa’. Initiatives like sagar mitra has taken the administration to the doorsteps of the fishing community.
