PANAJI: Goa witnessed widespread disruption on Wednesday as incessant heavy rainfall triggered flood-like conditions in several parts of the state.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded its earlier Orange Alert to a Red Alert, warning of extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 70 km/h. The IMD cautioned that a low-pressure area is likely to form around May 22, which could intensify and lead to more severe weather in the coming days.
In Panaji, intense waterlogging near key locations such as the Heera petrol pump and Miramar Circle led to major traffic snarls shortly after the rain began. Similar scenes played out across other low-lying areas of the capital.
Mapusa faced severe disruption as rainwater inundated homes and commercial establishments in vulnerable zones. The Mapusa market area, Khorlim Ansabhat, and the vicinity of the district hospital were among the worst-affected, with residents and shopkeepers struggling to manage the flooding.
In Canacona, water seepage damaged books and materials at the Ravindra Bhavan library, prompting immediate clean-up operations. Multiple incidents of tree falls were also reported across the state, leading to blocked roads and delayed commutes.
Authorities have urged the public to remain alert and follow real-time weather updates through the IMD’s Sachet app, as the heavy rainfall is expected to continue across Goa until May 27.
