PANAJI: In a major boost to Goa’s maritime and shipbuilding sector, the state government has placed orders for advanced machinery for the upcoming Konkan Maritime Cluster (KMC), being developed at Verna Industrial Estate.
The Konkan Maritime Cluster is India’s first maritime cluster under the Micro and Small Enterprises – Cluster Development Programme (MSE-CDP) of the Union Ministry of MSME.
Officials said the procurement marks a significant step in moving the project from the infrastructure stage to operational readiness. The Common Facility Centre (CFC) is expected to provide local MSMEs access to modern technology and shared industrial infrastructure that individual units may otherwise find difficult to afford.
Advanced Facilities Planned
The machinery ordered for the cluster includes advanced CNC cutting machines, specialized welding systems, modern painting booths, and industrial waste disposal facilities. The cluster will also feature testing and certification facilities to ensure vessels meet international maritime standards.
Digital design and simulation tools are also expected to assist local shipbuilders in developing modern and fuel-efficient vessels.
Boost to Shipbuilding Ecosystem
The project is expected to transform Goa’s shipbuilding ecosystem by promoting modular construction techniques and reducing turnaround time for vessel repairs and new shipbuilding projects.
Industry stakeholders believe the cluster will create an integrated ecosystem where design, fabrication, and certification services are available under one roof, helping Goa compete globally in the maritime sector.
Employment and Economic Impact
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant described the project as a “game-changer” for Goa’s industrial growth.
He stated that the cluster is expected to generate more than 3,000 direct and indirect jobs while supporting hundreds of ancillary units linked to shipbuilding and repair activities.
Consortium of Goan MSMEs
The Konkan Maritime Cluster is being developed by a consortium of around 54 Goan MSME units operating as a Special Purpose Vehicle. The project has received land allocation measuring 14,380 square metres from the Goa Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC), along with support from the Directorate of Industries, Trade and Commerce.
Goa currently contributes nearly 25 per cent of India’s shipbuilding capacity, and the operationalisation of the KMC is expected to further strengthen the state’s role in India’s Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and the broader blue economy initiative.
