PANAJI: The deadline for the state to reach 100% literacy has been rescheduled from May 30 to October 30. Under the New India Literacy Programme, 2,981 people in Goa have been identified as illiterate (NILP).
“We aimed to reach 100% literacy by May 30th, but only 729 out of the people we identified could make it to the test. We have advised the project approval board that, in light of this, we will meet the goal by October 30,” an official stated.
The goal established by the state is to locate and enlighten 3,000 people who lack literacy. These people, who range in age from 19 to 60, are both native-born and foreign-born.
The majority of the people identified under the program are daily wage workers, and since it’s cashew season, they must go to plantations for work especially the women which is why they were unable to show up for the exam. In order for the candidates to be able to respond, we now intend to hold another exam during the third week of June,” the official stated.
According to the official, through this central government initiative, people who are illiterate have been determined in each state in an effort to attain 100% literacy.
The responsibility for their education has been placed on nine newly appointed coordinators of adult resource trainees. Without resource trainee coordinators, we were unable to begin the task of identifying the illiterate population in the three talukas of Sanguem, Quepem, and Canacona. However, we will soon also cover these areas,” the representative stated.
“We want to give them vocational education in various disciplines through ITIs or vocational centers after they are taught to read and write,” the official stated.
