DABOLIM: GOACAN has urged the South Goa Collector and District Magistrate to conduct a thorough inquiry into the collapse of a large advertising hoarding near Dabolim Airport, an incident that reportedly resulted in a narrow escape for a biker.
In a letter to the Collector, GOACAN Coordinator Roland Martins said the incident could have had serious consequences from a road safety and traffic management perspective, particularly given its location near the international airport.
GOACAN has demanded that responsibility be fixed after examining the roles of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), District Police, Traffic Police, Airports Authority of India, Public Works Department and the concerned village panchayat.
The organisation has also called for a standard operating procedure (SOP) to prevent similar incidents at Dabolim and other locations across South Goa.
GOACAN said the absence of fatalities in the incident should be treated as an opportunity for the administration to take preventive measures before a major tragedy occurs.
The organisation also pointed out that World Tourism Day will be observed on September 27 and stressed the need to send a strong message on public safety to tourists and residents.
Copies of the representation have been forwarded to senior officials of the Revenue, Transport, Tourism, Health, PWD, Fire and Emergency Services departments, besides the Chief Electrical Engineer, SP Traffic and SP South Goa Police.
