New Delhi: India enjoyed another memorable day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with long jumper Murali Sreeshankar winning his second successive Commonwealth Games silver medal and para athlete Dilip Mahadu Gavit striking gold as the country’s medal tally continued to grow.
Sreeshankar produced a best jump of 8.09 metres to secure the silver medal in the men’s long jump, becoming the first Indian athlete to win consecutive Commonwealth Games medals in the event. After opening with a leap of 8.03 metres, he briefly moved into the gold medal position with his 8.09 metre effort before Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle surpassed him with a winning jump of 8.15 metres. Fellow Indian Lokesh Sathyanathan finished fifth with a best effort of 7.97 metres.
India then scripted history in para athletics with a remarkable one two finish in the men’s 100m T47 event. Dilip Mahadu Gavit stormed to gold in 10.71 seconds, while Mohammed Basil claimed silver after clocking 10.83 seconds. The victory gave India its third gold medal of the Games, following earlier triumphs by Mirabai Chanu and Sharmila Dhankar.
India’s boxing team also enjoyed a landmark day by ensuring 10 medals, surpassing its medal haul from the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Sakshi Chaudhary, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach, Ankush Panghal, Narender Berwal and Jaismine Lamboria advanced to the semifinals, joining Lovlina Borgohain, Priya Ghanghas, Preeti Pawar and Jadumani Singh. Jaismine capped the day with a 4-1 victory over England’s Elise Glynn in the women’s 57kg quarterfinal.
There was more success on the track as Yashas Palaksha and Santhosh K Tamilarasan qualified for the men’s 400m hurdles final as the two fastest losers. Meanwhile, shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor comfortably progressed to the final with a throw of 20.14 metres, while Samardeep Singh Gill also booked his place. Sprinter Animesh Kujur advanced to the 200m semifinals after recording a season best 20.46 seconds.
Not every event went India’s way, however. Manpreet Kaur narrowly missed the podium after finishing fourth in the women’s shot put final, while weightlifter Sanjana failed to finish the women’s 77kg event. Swimmers Sajan Prakash and Aneesh S Gowda were also unable to qualify for the men’s 200m freestyle final.
At the end of Day 7, India had climbed to 15 medals, comprising three gold, nine silver and three bronze, and occupied eighth place in the overall Commonwealth Games medal standings.
