New Delhi:
On January 15, 2025, India celebrated the 77th Army Day, a day that marks the nation’s military independence and honors the bravery and sacrifices of its soldiers. This significant event is observed annually to commemorate the historic transfer of command from British to Indian hands in 1949, when Field Marshal Kodandera Madappa Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army.
President Droupadi Murmu, the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, praised the Indian Army for its indispensable role in ensuring national security and fostering peace. “The Indian Army plays a pivotal role in ensuring national security. Our soldiers contribute to creating a peaceful environment for the country’s progress and prosperity,” she stated. President Murmu acknowledged the Army’s courage and professionalism, highlighting their involvement in anti-terrorism operations and their success in containing terrorism.
The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Samarth Bharat, Saksham Sena” (Capable India, Empowered Army), reflecting the Army’s commitment to national strength and defense capabilities. The Army Day parade, held in Pune this year, showcased the Army’s cutting-edge equipment, combat techniques, and cultural heritage through ethnic dances, military drills, and exhibitions.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh extended his heartfelt greetings to the soldiers, officers, and their families, saluting their “indomitable courage, valour, and selfless service.” He emphasized the Army’s crucial role not only in safeguarding the nation’s borders but also in disaster management, peacekeeping, and humanitarian efforts. Singh described the Indian Army as “a symbol of pride and trust for every Indian,” highlighting its rapid adoption of modern technology and commitment to self-reliance.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tribute to the soldiers, expressing the nation’s pride in their “indomitable courage and sacrifice.” He acknowledged the Army’s evolving role and the unprecedented steps taken to strengthen the military forces. Modi remembered the fallen heroes, saying, “The nation remembers with gratitude the valour, courage, sacrifice and austerity of our soldiers for the service of Mother India.”
The celebrations in Pune, home to the Southern Command Headquarters and the National Defence Academy (NDA), underscored the Army’s reach and presence across the country. The event was a grand affair, featuring a blend of parades, ethnic dances, and military drills that highlighted the Army’s operational readiness and rich cultural heritage.
