New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a strong message against terrorism at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on Tuesday, stressing that the international community must adopt a united approach and reject any form of double standards in dealing with the threat.
With Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif present at the summit, Modi called for the complete dismantling of the ecosystem that enables terrorism. He highlighted the need to target terrorist financing, recruitment, radicalisation and safe havens as part of a coordinated global effort.
Modi also called for conflicts around the world to be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, stressing that lasting solutions cannot be achieved through warfare.
Outlining India’s vision for the SCO, the Prime Minister identified Security, Connectivity and Opportunity as the three key pillars of cooperation.
On connectivity, Modi said India supports initiatives that link markets, promote trade and create new opportunities for development. At the same time, he emphasised that connectivity projects must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of every country.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the SCO’s role as a platform bringing together nations with diverse civilisations, cultures and ideas. He said people to people connections should become a central focus of the organisation’s cooperation over the next 25 years.
India has been encouraging greater engagement among young people across SCO member states through initiatives such as the Start up Forum, Young Authors’ Conclave and Young Scientists’ Forum.
Modi’s remarks placed counterterrorism at the centre of India’s SCO agenda, while also underlining the importance of peaceful conflict resolution, stronger regional connectivity and deeper cooperation among the people of member nations.
