PANAJI: The High Court of Bombay at Goa has voiced its concern about the rising death toll in the State of Goa during the hearing of a petition pertaining to an accident involving an uninsured vehicle. pointing out that 2023 saw the greatest number of fatalities in a year since 2020—276.
The High Court has further noted that, in a state with a population of just 16 lakh, the number of lives lost in traffic accidents paints an extremely dismal picture.
The High Court has further noted that while there will never be enough money to replace a person lost in a car accident, arrangements must be made so that their dependents can get benefits. For the rest of their terrified lives, even the crippled survivor needs compensation to keep going.
The High Court noted in its ruling that when uninsured vehicles cause traffic accidents, it can be very difficult and time-consuming to recover damages.
As a result, the court ordered the DGP, the North and South Goa Collectors, and the Transport Director to issue directives, orders, and circulars directing them to prosecute the drivers and owners of uninsured vehicles.
The High Court has also ordered the Goa police and the Transport Department to determine whether or not a vehicle without the necessary third-party risk insurance coverage should be permitted to enter the State of Goa, as well as to verify at all border entry points whether the vehicle has such coverage.
