Panaji: Young designers showcase craft inspired innovation, sustainability, and contemporary design at Panaji event
Goa witnessed a vibrant celebration of creativity and design excellence as the JD Design Awards 2026 brought together emerging talents from the fields of interior and fashion design. Held at Panjim Gymkhana in Panaji on June 8, the event highlighted the fusion of traditional craftsmanship with modern design thinking, reinforcing the growing relevance of artisanal heritage in contemporary creative industries.
Centered on themes of cultural legacy, sustainability, and innovation, the showcase featured a diverse range of projects and collections developed by students of JD School of Design and JD Institute, Goa. Designers explored ways to reinterpret age old crafts through modern applications, creating concepts that reflected both functionality and artistic expression.
The Interior Design Showcase focused on the connection between space, materials, and Indian craftsmanship. Participants presented a variety of projects, including hospitality, residential, and commercial concepts inspired by traditional crafts and sustainable design principles. The category recognised outstanding work across multiple disciplines, with awards presented for sustainable artisan collaborations, material craftsmanship, artisan led interventions, experiential design, heritage craft reinterpretation, and contemporary craft integration. Special industry recognition honours were also presented to architects Tallulah D’Silva and Gerard D’Cunha for their contributions to the field.
The Fashion Design Showcase, presented under the theme Artisan 2.0, celebrated contemporary fashion rooted in craft traditions. Collections showcased innovative approaches to textile development, surface design, sustainability, styling, and heritage revival. Awards were presented across several categories recognising excellence in material exploration, sustainable practices, prêt fashion, avant garde expression, presentation, and future focused craft innovation.
The event was supported by a wide network of industry partners and collaborators who contributed to both the interior and fashion showcases.
Addressing the gathering, founder of JD School of Design and Managing Trustee of JD Educational Trust, Nealesh Dalal, emphasised the importance of balancing innovation with cultural roots. He noted that the projects presented demonstrated how traditional craft practices can inspire fresh ideas, meaningful experiences, and future ready solutions.
The awards concluded with a strong message that creativity, collaboration, and cultural heritage remain essential drivers of innovation in design.
