PANAJI: Raising concern over the high unemployment rate that includes more than 70 per cent of graduates, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant today stressed the need to encourage skilled-based education to create a better workforce.
Sawant said that the State government has initiated various convergence efforts across the skill ecosystem to enhance skill levels and create a skilled workforce which is a need of the hour.
“Everyone must have read in the newspaper that 13% of people are unemployed in Goa. Is Government alone responsible? What is interesting is more than 70% of unemployed are graduates, including engineers,” he said.
He said that Ambedkar and Phule promoted Women’s Education then, but today the need of the hour is Skill Education, which is encouraging.
“Government alone cannot do anything. Educational institutions will also have to take the lead and introduce skilled-based courses. We need to work together to reduce the unemployment ratio,” Sawant said.
Chief Minister said youths will also have to take the lead and look beyond arts, commerce, and science.
He said that with the opening of Mopa international Airport, the job requirement in the tourism sector will increase manifold. “I urged Educational institutions to start courses related to the hospitality sector,” he said.
He also appealed to institutes to regularly interact with the industry sector to prepare students for jobs when they pass out.
