Ponda:Serious concerns over hygiene and infrastructure at the Ponda fish market have come to the fore following an inspection by Congress leader Rajesh Verekar along with Manisha Usgaonkar.
During the visit, the leaders highlighted long-standing issues related to sanitation, drainage, and lack of basic public facilities at one of the busiest market hubs in the region.
Usgaonkar raised strong concerns over inadequate infrastructure, noting that the market caters to people from multiple constituencies but continues to face persistent problems such as poor cleanliness, insufficient drainage systems, and lack of proper parking space. She said these issues are affecting both vendors and customers on a daily basis.
She further pointed out that the situation worsens during the monsoon, with waterlogging and overflowing drains posing serious hygiene and health risks, making it difficult for traders to function and for the public to access the market safely.
Criticising delays in addressing long-pending demands, she said that despite repeated assurances, concrete improvements have not been implemented on the ground.
Usgaonkar also flagged potential public health hazards arising from poor sanitation and urged authorities to take immediate corrective measures. She emphasised that timely execution of development works is essential rather than repeated announcements.
The leaders called for urgent intervention to ensure proper maintenance, upgraded infrastructure, and a safer environment for vendors and consumers at the Ponda fish market.
