The Indian Constitution gives us freedom of speech that does not mean we make comments which hurt religious sentiments.
The same Constitution also gives us freedom of religion hence people like Subash Velingkar and Fr Bolmax Pereira who hurt religious feelings with comments on St Francis Xavier and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj need to be dealt with seriously for creating communal divide.
While individuals have the right to express their opinions, it should not come at the cost of creating communal disharmony.
Velingkar time and again has hurt Christians’s sentiments with his comments on SFX and the current DNA test seems to have crossed the limit.
Okay let us assume forVelingkars argument’s sake that Hindus were tortured and murdered for not converting then but what is the use of raking up the issue now?
In Goa, especially Hindus and Christians live in harmony. Unlike other states, there is no social discord. Of course, only a few like Mr Velingkar would not agree with this but Goa and Goans are happier today as they want to live in peace respecting each other’s religions.
Dr Pramod Saintant our honourable Chief Minister had said that nobody would be spared for making comments which would hurt religious sentiments. So we wonder why he is waiting for Velingkar’s arrest.
Remember Fr Bolmax was in the eye of the storm for making comments on Shivaji and he had to run from pillar to post to get anticipatory bail. This was after he had even apologised for hurting the sentiments of the Hindus.
In recent times, the delicate balance between freedom of speech and religious sentiments has been a topic of heated debate in India. The case of Subash Velingkar, who has been known for his controversial comments, has once again brought this issue to the forefront.
Velingkar’s repeated remarks, particularly those that have targeted the sentiments of the Christian community, have sparked outrage and division. It is evident that such actions have the potential to disrupt peace and harmony among different religious groups.
One of Velingkar’s arguments revolves around the historical persecution of Hindus and the atrocities they faced during certain periods. While acknowledging historical injustices is important, it is crucial to question the relevance of raking up these issues in the present day. Revisiting historical grievances without a constructive purpose can only serve to reopen old wounds and sow seeds of discord in a society that has otherwise coexisted peacefully.
It is noteworthy that in Goa, a state known for its religious diversity, Hindus and Christians have historically lived in harmony. The prevailing atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding has contributed to the overall happiness and well-being of the people. While it is undeniable that there may be differing perspectives, the majority of Goans are committed to upholding this spirit of peaceful coexistence.
This instance emphasizes the importance of individuals being held responsible for their actions when they cause harm through insensitive or derogatory remarks.
The need to uphold the delicate balance between freedom of speech and respect for religious sentiments cannot be overstated. While individuals have the right to express their opinions, it is imperative to do so in a manner that does not incite communal discord or hurt the sentiments of others. The case of Subash Velingkar underscores the necessity for accountability and the enforcement of consequences in cases where such boundaries are crossed. It is essential for the authorities to take proactive measures to address such instances in order to preserve harmony and unity among the diverse religious communities in India.
