PORVORIM: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant declared that the government would be changing the law to ensure that Goans would always have a job in the private sector.
His remarks follow criticism of two pharmaceutical companies, Encube Ethicals and Indoco Remedies Ltd., for holding interviews in Maharashtra for positions at their Goa plants. In response to backlash from the public and the CM’s intervention, the recruitment drive was canceled.
“We know exactly what we want. Locals are given preference when hiring, and in the next legislative session, we will amend the current Labour and Employment Law as needed.Instead of being assigned to temporary jobs in the private sector, Goans ought to be offered permanent positions, he said.
MLA Vijai Sardesai of the Goa Forward Party responded to the recruitment advertisement by stating that it is unacceptable to ignore the youth of Goa in their state.
“The two pharmaceutical plants in Goa are planning to hold walk-in interviews in Maharashtra. This is an insult to Goa and a calculated attempt to avoid hiring Goans. When Goa’s jobless rate exceeds the national average, this is permitted to occur, Sardesai stated.
“I demand that the proposed 80% job reservation for Goans in the private sector be implemented. I demand that the government make an immediate, simultaneous investment to improve our youth’s employability and skills,” Sardesai said.
Targeting the BJP government, the Revolutionary Goans Party and Congress party had also brought up the issue.
