New Delhi: India has reinforced its long standing cultural and sporting relationship with Jamaica by gifting a modern electronic scoreboard to the iconic Sabina Park stadium. The facility was formally dedicated during a joint event attended by India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
Describing the moment, Jaishankar emphasised the deep connection shared by the two countries through cricket. He noted that the relationship between India and Jamaica is built on mutual respect, friendship, and a shared passion for the sport, expressing hope that the new scoreboard will witness many memorable performances in the years ahead.
Sabina Park, one of the most historic cricket venues in the Caribbean, has hosted numerous landmark matches over decades. The addition of the electronic scoreboard is expected to enhance the viewing experience while also symbolising the growing partnership between the two nations.
The minister also made a light hearted remark about the absence of legendary Jamaican cricketer Chris Gayle, noting that his presence would have added to the occasion. Jamaica, as part of the West Indies cricketing tradition, has produced several global icons who have contributed significantly to the sport’s popularity worldwide.
Beyond cricket, the visit underlined broader cultural connections. Jaishankar visited Old Harbour, a site of historical importance where the first Indian migrants arrived over 180 years ago. He also engaged with members of the Indian origin community, acknowledging their role in preserving traditions and strengthening ties between the two countries.
The visit to Jamaica forms part of a wider diplomatic outreach that includes stops in Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago. Through such engagements, India continues to deepen its relationships across the Caribbean, with cricket remaining a powerful and enduring link.
