New Delhi: India has intensified its rescue and relief efforts in flood-hit Nepal, with 163 Indian nationals rescued from affected areas and 151 Indians leaving China as of 7:30 PM on September 1. Five additional Indians were rescued since the previous update as emergency operations continued across disaster-hit regions.
Nepal has been severely affected by devastating floods that have reportedly claimed more than 1,050 lives, while over 580 foreign nationals remain missing. Rescue teams are continuing searches in several affected areas as families wait for information about missing relatives.
An Indian tunnel rescue team has established a foothold inside hydropower tunnels in Chilime, but its progress has been slowed by extremely narrow access points, difficult terrain and a marshy tunnel floor. The conditions have also restricted the use of specialised rescue equipment.
Despite the challenges, the team has adopted improvised techniques, including the use of specially prepared floats, to move deeper into the tunnel. Rescue operations are expected to continue as teams search for people who may still be trapped inside.
India has also expanded its forensic assistance in coordination with Nepalese authorities. Indian forensic specialists are working on the examination and analysis of DNA samples to help accelerate the identification process amid the large number of casualties and missing persons.
The ongoing response combines rescue operations, humanitarian assistance and forensic identification. Indian teams are continuing to coordinate with their Nepalese counterparts, with further efforts planned in the tunnel areas and laboratories as the search for survivors and missing people continues.
