New Delhi: India has successfully conducted a flight test of its advanced Agni Missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targeted Re Entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology, marking a major boost to the country’s strategic defence capabilities.
The test was carried out over the Indian Ocean Region from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island on Friday. According to defence officials, the missile successfully deployed multiple payloads designed to strike different targets spread across a wide geographical area.
The MIRV system allows a single missile to carry and release several warheads, each capable of independently hitting separate strategic targets. The successful trial demonstrated India’s growing capability to strengthen its long range deterrence and improve preparedness against evolving security threats.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Indian Army and participating industries for the successful mission. He stated that the achievement would significantly enhance India’s defence preparedness at a time of rising global and regional security concerns.
During the test, telemetry and tracking operations were conducted through multiple ground based and ship based stations that monitored the missile throughout its trajectory, from launch to payload impact. Officials confirmed that all mission objectives were successfully achieved during the exercise.
The missile system has been developed by various DRDO laboratories with support from domestic defence industries, reflecting India’s continued push towards indigenous military technology and self reliance in advanced defence manufacturing.
The successful Agni test comes just days after another major defence milestone. Earlier this week, the DRDO and the Indian Air Force carried out the maiden flight trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon system off the coast of Odisha.
TARA is India’s first indigenous glide weapon system designed to convert unguided warheads into precision guided weapons. Developed by Research Centre Imarat and other DRDO laboratories, the system is aimed at improving targeting accuracy while maintaining low operational costs. Production of the system has already begun with support from Indian defence industry partners.
