New Delhi:
As India prepares to face England in a crucial five-Test series starting June 20, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a proactive step to ensure the team is well-prepared for the challenging English conditions. Following a disappointing Test cricket season, marked by losses to New Zealand and Australia, the BCCI has organized three four-day matches against England Lions in the UK.
The decision to schedule these preparatory matches is a direct response to India’s recent struggles in Test cricket. The team’s 0-3 defeat at home against New Zealand and a 1-3 series loss in Australia have highlighted the need for extensive preparation, especially for star players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are looking to regain their form and address technical issues.
These four-day matches, set to take place between the IPL final on May 25 and the start of the first Test on June 20, are designed to help Indian players adjust to the English conditions. The BCCI recognizes that English conditions, known for their challenging nature, particularly for batters, require specific preparation. The matches against England Lions will provide a valuable opportunity for the players to get accustomed to the red-ball cricket and the unique conditions they will face in England.
India’s recent performances have been a wake-up call, ending their unbeaten home streak and missing out on the World Test Championship final. These preparatory matches are crucial not only for the players to regain their form but also for the selectors to evaluate performances before the England Tests. Experienced players, who have faced criticism for their recent form, will participate in these matches to improve their skills and readiness.
The concept of preparatory matches is not new for India. Previously, similar ‘A’ tours to Australia ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy proved beneficial. Young Indian players such as Sarfaraz Khan, Akash Deep, Dhruv Jurel, and Prasidh Krishna have previously benefited from such matches against the England Lions, going on to make significant contributions in subsequent series.
While the T20 Blast in England might affect the availability of some first-choice players for the England Lions, the BCCI is optimistic about the quality of opposition. The arrangement with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) ensures high-quality opposition for these shadow tours, similar to previous successful tours.
