Bengaluru: Leaving behind the nightmare of first innings, India have made a fine start to their second dig with the opening duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma adding 57 runs in 15 overs when the tea break was taken. Rachin Ravindra struck a fine century while Tim Southee scored a fifty as New Zealand were bowled out 402 in their first innings to take 356-run lead over India. Ravindra was the last wicket to fall after scoring a superb 134. Devon Conway was the second-highest scorer of the innings with 91 while Tim Southee made 65. For India, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav took three wickets each while Mohammed Siraj chipped in with a couple of scalps. Jasprit Bumrah and Ravichandran Ashwin took a wicket each.
New Zealand lost four wickets in the morning session of Day 3 but also added runs aplenty to maintain control of the first Test in Bengaluru.
India will be fighting hard to chip away at the dominant NZ batting order after their abysmal outing with the bat in the first innings. Devon Conway’s spectacular 91, and a steady stand from Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell ensured that NZ eased to a comfortable 134-run lead at the end of Day 2.
Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke wreaked havoc as India were bowled out for a mere 46 runs in their first innings in Bengaluru. Henry took a five-wicket haul while O’Rourke took four to condemn India to their lowest Test innings total in a home Test.
Earlier yesterday, Rohit opted to bat first against New Zealand. The hosts made a couple of changes to their playing XI from the last Test. Shubman Gill isn’t 100 per cent fit and therefore misses out. Gill has been replaced by Sarfaraz Khan. Also missing out his fast bowler Akash Deep as India bring in another spinner in Kuldeep Yadav.
