New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York and held wide ranging discussions on key international developments, including the ongoing conflicts in West Asia, Ukraine and Sudan. The meeting took place as India officially launched its campaign for a non permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028 to 2029 term.
The discussions were held on the sidelines of the campaign launch at the UN Headquarters, marking the start of India’s diplomatic outreach to seek the support of member nations ahead of the Security Council elections next year. The meeting also highlighted the strong partnership between India and the United Nations on a range of global issues.
As part of the campaign, Jaishankar introduced India’s six point vision titled SHANTI, which stands for Securing Holistic Advancement through Norms, Trust and Integrity. The framework outlines India’s priorities if elected to the Security Council and reflects its commitment to strengthening global peace, security and international cooperation.
The SHANTI vision focuses on amplifying the voice of the Global South in international decision making, promoting reforms to make multilateral institutions more democratic and representative, and modernising UN peacekeeping operations with advanced technology. It also supports a human centric approach to artificial intelligence, advocates a free and rules based maritime order in line with international law, and calls for stronger global action against terrorism and terror financing.
Jaishankar said India would continue to promote dialogue, cooperation and consensus building while working to bridge global differences. He also reaffirmed India’s support for the Women, Peace and Security agenda and stressed the importance of ensuring peacekeeping missions remain focused on their core responsibilities.
India will contest the Asia Pacific non permanent seat in the UN General Assembly elections next year for the 2028 to 2029 term. If successful, it will be India’s ninth tenure as an elected member of the 15 member Security Council. Alongside this campaign, New Delhi continues to pursue its long standing objective of securing a permanent seat on a reformed UN Security Council.
