PANAJI: In a shocking revelation, an Instagram advertisement has been uncovered that allegedly promotes the sale of illicit drugs in various tourist hotspots in Goa, including Calangute and Anjuna.
The ad, which has sparked widespread outrage among the local community and authorities, openly lists substances such as cocaine, ecstasy, and weed, along with their prices and a “Shop Now” link.
The advertisement, which appears to be targeting tourists and locals alike, has raised significant concerns about the escalating issue of drug abuse in the state. The post mentions specific locations like Arambol, Calangute, and Anjuna, areas known for their vibrant nightlife and tourist attractions. This blatant marketing of illegal substances has led to a chorus of demands for an immediate investigation by the Goa Police.
Citizens and local business owners are expressing deep concern over the brazen nature of the advertisement. “This is a clear indication of how rampant the drug trade has become in our state,” said a local resident who wished to remain anonymous. “It’s alarming to see such open promotion of drugs, especially in areas frequented by tourists and young people.”
The Goa Police have been urged to take swift and decisive action against those responsible for the advertisement. “The police need to crack down on this immediately,” stated a local business owner. “We cannot allow our state to become a hub for drug trafficking and abuse.”
The advertisement violates several laws, including the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which strictly prohibits the sale, possession, and distribution of illicit substances. Legal experts are calling for stringent action against the individuals or groups behind the ad.
“This is a clear case of promoting and facilitating drug trafficking, which is a serious offense under Indian law,” said a legal expert. “The authorities must trace the source of this advertisement and take appropriate legal action.”
The incident also highlights the role and responsibility of social media platforms in monitoring and regulating content. Instagram, owned by Meta, has policies against promoting or selling illicit substances, but the presence of such ads suggests a gap in their enforcement mechanisms.
“Social media companies need to be more proactive in identifying and removing such content,” said a digital rights activist. “They have a responsibility to ensure their platforms are not used for illegal activities.”
The Goa Police have confirmed that they are aware of the situation and are initiating an investigation into the matter. “We take such allegations very seriously and will take all necessary steps to identify and prosecute those involved,” said a police official.
As the investigation unfolds, the community remains vigilant, calling for continued vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement and social media platforms to combat the drug trade.
