New Delhi: The IPL 2026 playoff race has taken another dramatic turn after Punjab Kings suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, opening the door for several teams still chasing a place in the top four.
After beginning the season with seven unbeaten matches, Punjab’s campaign has suddenly lost momentum. Led by Shreyas Iyer, PBKS currently sit on 14 points from 11 games and still control their own destiny, but the margin for error has narrowed considerably.
Punjab’s remaining fixtures against Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants could decide whether they qualify comfortably or slip out of contention altogether. Two wins from the final three matches should secure qualification, while even one victory may be enough if their net run rate remains healthy.
At the top of the table, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Sunrisers Hyderabad are both strongly placed with 14 points each from 11 matches. One more win will confirm their playoff berths, while winning two or more games could strengthen their push for a top two finish.
Gujarat Titans have also surged into contention after a strong second half of the season. Although they too are on 14 points, their negative net run rate means they may require at least two more victories to avoid complications.
The recent PBKS collapse has revived hopes for Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who both stand on 12 points. Each side likely needs two wins from their remaining matches to remain firmly in the race.
For Kolkata Knight Riders, the situation is more difficult. With only 10 points and a poor net run rate, they may need to win all four remaining games to stay alive.
Delhi Capitals remain mathematically in contention with eight points but would require victories in all remaining matches along with multiple favourable results elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants have officially been eliminated from the playoff race.
